Turf and Urban Landscape
"....to promote the conservation and protection of water resources in the urban environment
through improved irrigation management and enhanced horticultural practices."

In 1993 Northern Water expanded its Irrigation Management Service to include a Turf and Urban Landscape
Water Management & Conservation program. While municipalities currently own approximately 66 percent of
all Colorado-Big Thompson Project units, in a typical year agriculture uses about 60 percent of all C-BT
water allocated. Municipalities and industries use the other 40 percent, with more than half of treated
municipal water used for outdoor irrigation.
Northern Water is a resource for approximately 830,000 residents in eight Northern Colorado counties. Its
education and training programs, studies and demonstrations help residents and communities manage, conserve
and protect the area’s water resources, particularly water used for landscape irrigation.
Northern Water trains turfgrass managers, landscape professionals and water conservation specialists to monitor
landscape water use, learn irrigation scheduling techniques, and perform irrigation audits, with an emphasis on
voluntary cooperation and participation. Northern Water resources are available to the public through presentations,
reports, field days, tours, handouts, and brochures like the
Lawn Watering Guide and
the Conservation Gardens Brochure.
