Green Mountain Reservoir

Green Mountain Reservoir is located on the Blue River approximately twelve
miles southeast of Kremmling. Constructed between 1938 and 1943, the
reservoir provides compensatory storage to West Slope residents for water
diverted to the East Slope via the Colorado-Big Thompson Project.
Green Mountain reservoir, dam, and power plant were the first C-BT
Project features to be constructed. During the summer of 1939 labor strife
at the construction site led Colorado governor Ralph Carr to call out the
National Guard to enforce martial law in Grand and Summit counties.
Green Mountain Power Plant was the first power unit of the C-BT Project to produce electricity. It began power production in May 1943.
Located at the base of Green Mountain Dam, the power plant utilizes the regulated streamflow of the Blue River and the water released from storage in Green Mountain Reservoir to generate electricity. It is one of six power plants - the only one on the West Slope - in the Colorado-Big Thompson Project.
The 25.8 megawatt capacity plant cost $1.5 million to build. Construction began Dec. 9, 1938. In 1942 the War Production Board halted construction on all of the C-BT Project's features except Green Mountain Power Plant. The facility was nearly complete and would produce power essential to the war effort.
