Horsetooth Reservoir

Horsetooth Reservoir at capacity

The reservoir provides drinking water to the city of Fort Collins and numerous rural domestic suppliers. It also provides water for regional industries and irrigation water for farmers throughout the Poudre River basin.

Construction on Horsetooth Reservoir began in 1946 and was complete in 1949. The first water was stored in January 1951. Horsetooth was officially dedicated July 21, 1951, when water was first released to the Poudre River.

Horsetooth is filled primarily with water from the Colorado River headwaters on the West Slope. It is delivered through the Hansen Feeder Canal. The canal begins 13.2 miles south of Horsetooth, at Flatiron Reservoir.

Horsetooth Reservoir is owned by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. In 1987, USBR turned over operation and maintenance of the reservoir to the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District. Larimer County Parks and Open Lands, under a contract with the USBR, manages the recreation areas surrounding the reservoir. Larimer County maintains the roads around the reservoir.

Horsetooth Reservoir is the No. 1 recreation area in Larimer County. More than 500,000 people visit each year to fish, boat, camp, picnic and hike. The reservoir is named for distinctive geological outcroppings in the area.
