After examining hundreds of alternatives within the South Platte, St. Vrain, Big Thompson and Cache la Poudre watersheds in 2003, the District and NISP partners chose a combination of Glade Reservoir and the South Platte Water Conservation Project (SPWCP) as their preferred project for making NISP a reality. To learn more about this process, download the NISP Phase II Executive Summary.

NISP’s preferred project configuration includes Glade and Galeton reservoirs. Glade Reservoir, at 170,000 acre feet, is slightly larger than neighboring Horsetooth Reservoir. Construction of Glade will require the relocation of seven miles of U.S. Highway 287 northwest of Fort Collins. Galeton Reservoir, located northeast of Greeley, will provide local farmers with new water from the South Platte River. In exchange, the farmers will help fill Glade Reservoir by allowing the project to use Poudre River water they have used for over a century.
